Windows on the World, the famed restaurant and function venue; Top of the World, a glass-enclosed observatory and outdoor observation deck; and the other World Trade Center venues were destroyed in the attacks.

Windows on the World co-owner David Emil wants to find a way to rebuild his world-famous restaurant. "We’re not going to give up," Emil told Crain’s New York Business. "I believe that Windows should reopen, but how that will happen and how long that will be from now is too early to tell."

The landmark 50,000-square-foot complex opened on top of the north tower of the World Trade Center in 1976. Windows underwent a $25 million revamp after the 1993 WTC bombing, and last year reported revenues were $37.5 million, making it the highest-grossing restaurant in America.

"We had just done a meeting at Marriott World Trade Center and a dinner at Windows on the World a few weeks prior to the attack," says Patrick Sullivan, owner/operator, PRA Destination Management New York. "It is so surreal that they are no longer there."

Until the landmark restaurant is rebuilt, Sullivan says there are other dining spots that command spectacular views of Manhattan including the Rainbow Room and the Sky Club.

The Sky Club is a private club on the 56th floor of the Met Life Building over Grand Central Station. It is frequently used for corporate events and can accommodate seated functions of up to 300 and receptions of up to 500.

The Rainbow Room is on the 65th floor of NBC Building in Rockefeller Center. There are two restaurants here, and many different function rooms that can accommodate up to 400 in one room.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are closed indefinitely because of security concerns. (212) 363-3200.

The 102-story Empire State Building, now the tallest in New York City, has reopened its 86th-floor observation deck after being closed for several weeks following the terrorist attacks. At press time, the observatory is open only on the weekends but the possibility of returning to a daily schedule is being considered.
